TWO HUNDRED SWIM IN GALA REVIVAL
Sudbury & District Swimming Club stage their first club gala on Saturday at the pool. Although this gala is the first since 1976, it has been and annual event for most of the 40 years that the Sudbury pool has been open.
Many of the 200 members have entered for the 17 cups, which have been donated over the years. There are 30 events listed on the programme, which starts 6:00pm. These vary from a non-swimmers walking race to an 8 x 1 length squadron relay.
The swimming entertainment will also be given a new dimension with a performance by the Newmarket Synchronettes, who have agreed to come to Sudbury to give a demonstration of synchronised swimming, which has greatly increased in popularity.
It is interesting to note that when Suffolk Free Press reported on the club gala on September 4, 1947, we stated: "Upwards of a thousand people were present, including Poles and German POWs (one of the later being a prizewinner), and officials were somewhat hampered by room." There was also a race between the Services, which Mr A. C. Phillips (RAF), Mr J. Judge (RN) and Mr L. W. McQuhae (Home Guard) swam in their uniforms.
The present Sudbury Swimming Club hope that this year's gala will also be a great success as 1947 obviously was.
They are hoping that many spectators who are not connected with the club will come along and support. refreshments will be available during the evening. Admission is adults 25p, children 15p.
