Storms’ County Champion!

The much anticipated Suffolk County Swimming Championships started this weekend with the Long Distance (800m & 1500m) events, which were held at the 50m Pool at the UEA in Norwich.  The highlight of the Suffolk swimming calendar, brings together all of Suffolk’s top swimmers for a mammoth event over 5 weekends in February and March, involving literally hundreds of swimmers from across the county.

Sudbury Storms got off to amazing start to this year’s competition with swimming sensation, Emily Dowding (11) becoming County Champion in the 800m Freestyle in her age group.  She had a great 800m swim, setting a new personal best time of 10:49.32 beating her previous best time by a staggering 29 seconds.  Emily had a nervous two heats to endure after her swim for confirmation of her gold medal, as two of her competitors with faster entry times were in later heats.  It was a nail biting time for her, but as she saw confirmation of her gold medal position, you could see the relief and excitement from the youngster brimming over.

Storms Head Coach, Paul Cook who was with Emily at Norwich said “Emily had an awkward heat, as she was 50m ahead of anyone else in her heat, so she had to swim it all alone.  The split times she recorded were exactly where we wanted her to be, but I have no idea where her final 100m swim came from.  She stormed it and gave it everything she had.  She always swims with such determination both in competition and training.  Emily’s gold medal is a perfect reward for a very dedicated and talented swimmer”

Paul continued “We have a very large squad going to the County’s this year and I’m pretty confident we can return with a few more county champions this year.”

Storms League Success

Storms took both their A and B teams to compete at the second round of this year’s Suffolk County Winter League.  The A team were competing at Bury St Edmunds and the B team headed off to Stowmarket.  Many of the Storms squad have been in an intensive training period on the lead up to the County’s championships in March.  This didn’t stop them turning out some great performances.

The A team, competing in Division One came up against local rivals Halstead and West Suffolk.  The second round of competition involves 100m events for most age groups, which seemed to favour the Storms swimmers.  Storms A had a great battle with Halstead right up until the end of the gala, pipping them to 3rd place by just 6 points.  West Suffolk however, were superior on the day, taking 2nd place to Lowestoft A by a single point.

In the 2nd Division gala, Sudbury B delivered some incredible performances and took on some of the leagues stronger teams with a nail biting climax to the gala which left three teams 5 points apart. Storms B finished in 3rd place ahead of Saxons B but only 2 points behind 2nd place Stowmarket B.

Senior Coach, Paul Murray congratulated both teams, saying “our swimmers are in the middle of a very intensive period of hard training in readiness for the County Championships.  It was really pleasing to see them do so well considering the week of training they have just come out of.  The swimmers desire to perform for the team is so strong it allows them to find those extra reserves you need when racing when tired”.

Last Chance Open Meet

It was a tense week for the Storms Club leading up to the club’s Last Chance County Qualifier Open Meet last weekend.  With snow covering many parts of the region, the club’s management must have been overjoyed to see only a light covering of snow on Saturday morning.  Robin Deal, the club’s gala promoter said “we had nearly 320 competitors from 17 teams across Suffolk, Norfolk & Essex due to compete at this important gala.  We got lucky and whilst a couple of teams decided not to travel, we had a fantastic turnout from clubs as far afield as Norwich and Bishop’s Stortford; competing across the two days of competition”.
The gala is hosted by Storms each year at the Kingfisher Leisure Centre and is promoted as the ‘Last Chance’ for swimmers to attain their county qualifying times.  The Suffolk County championships will be held at Ipswich Crown pools over 3 weekends in March and is seen as the pinnacle of the county swimming calendar.
Storms’ swimmers had a great weekend, breaking a staggering 144 personal best times, 47 of which were new County qualifying times.  These came from; Francesca Clark, Francesca King,  Jessica Dilling, Gemma Rides, Cara Hetherington, Emma Main, Sophie Heaton, Ella Rides, Florence Grubb, Kate Hann, Harry Milsom, Mollie Milsom, Sam Clark, Abigail Vowles, Hannah McNaul, Seb Pettican, Thomas Williams & Olivia Sherred.
The club also saw 3 members of the team achieve East Region Championships Qualifying times.  These came from Thomas Williams (24), Ella Rides (13) and Storms youngest qualifier Emily Dowding (11).

Club records also tumbled during the two days of competition, with Mollie Milsom smashing the 12 year old 50m Butterfly record in 34.51.  Ella Rides, whilst qualifying for the East region Championships also took a club record in the 14 year old 200m Breaststroke in 2:59.01.  Thomas Williams, who’s been in great form all season continued his record breaking season with a club record in the 200m Breaststroke in 2:32.80.
Following a last minute time trail hosted by the club a few days before the closing date for the championships, Storms added a further 3 swimmers to the County Championships squad.  Chris Greenhalgh, Nathan Alexander and Kelly Thake all had outstanding swims, each achieving the qualifying standard.  The Storms squad will now consist of 52 swimmers, which is 16 more than last year.
Sudbury Storms Head Coach – Paul Cook commented “we had two days of brilliant swimming last weekend.  Not just the Sudbury swimmers, but also all the other teams that came along.  There were consistent roars of joy heard throughout the competition, as swimmers achieved their county qualifying times.  It’s going to be an intensive couple of months for our swimmers, with some hard work in the pool before the championships in March.  We have had a fantastic year so far and this is evident from the 52 swimmers we will be taking to the 2010 County Championships.”
