sudbury masters take 13 medals at gala - 1994

Sudbury swimmers won 13 medals in the Suffolk Masters Gala held at the Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre, Stowmarket.

Results :-

John Fry :- Gold 4 x 25m I.M.(PB), Silver 50m Breast, Silver 50m Fly, Silver 50m Free. Stuart McLellan :- Gold 50m Free, Silver 50m Fly, Silver 4 x 25m IM. Barbara Le Masurier :- Gold 50m Breast, Silver 50m Free, Bronze 4 x 25m IM, Bronze 50m Fly (PB). Vicki Buck :- Silver 4 x 25m IM. Mary Whybrow :- Bronze 50m Back, 4th 4 x 25m IM (PB), 50m Fly (PB). Mark Swift :- 50m Fly (PB), 50m Breast (PB), 50m Fly (PB). Pam Abbot :- 4 x 25m IM (PB), 50m Free (PB), 50m Fly (PB)

Masters are among the medals again

Five members of the sudbury masters swimmers travelled to Basingstroke on Sunday to compete in a very tough gala and were again among the medals.

John Fry won the silve medal in three events, the 50m breaststroke, 50m Freestyle and the IM. He also took the broze nedals in the 50m Fly and the 25 meters freestyle. Stuart McLellan won bronze inthe 50 meters freestyle, 25 meters freestyle and the IM.Pam Abbott swam well to achieve personal best times in the 50 meters freestyle and the 25 meters freestyle and other swimmers in the squad were Jeremy Boyd and Sharoin Reid.

john among the aussie golds

Sudbury masters swimmer, John Fry, took a holiday in Australia that coincided with the ASustralian Nationa 1994 Masters Swimming Championships.

He came home in tiumph having won three gold medals, two silver medals plus an award for top swimmer in his age group (50 - 54) and runner up in the combined age-group competition. The competition took place at the 50 metres Olympic pool in Adelaide over five days, which John pictured right, found overwelming to begin with. But he quickly overcame any doubts he had by taking a gold medal in his first event... the 100m breaststroke in a time of 1:29.17

He won the 200 meters individual medley, one length of each stroke, in a personal best time of 3:03.56.. only a few lengths short of a 50-54 age group national record.

On the third cane a setback a silver medal in the 50 metres butterfly with a time of 35.91.

Tough contest for the masters

Sudbury Masters swimmers travelled to Sheffield for the National Masters Championships and came up against some very strong opposition.

But they did well with Stuart McLellan taking fifth place in the 400m IM with a personal best time and achieved another personal best time in the 1500 m front crawl for another fifth place and also took fifth in the 200m front crawl. He was seventh in the 100m butterfly and 400m front crawl and ninth in the 100m front crawl.

Sharon Reid returned to Suffolk with a bronze medal from the 800m front crawl and came fouth in the 400m front crawl. She also achieved a personal best time in the 200m butterfly.

There was also abronze medal for John Fry in the 200m breaststroke and a personal best time and fourth place in the 100m breaststroke. He took sixth places in the 50m breaststroke- with another personal best time - and in the 100m IM.

Barbera LeMesurier achieved fourth places in the 200m breststroke and 50m breststoke and canme 13th in the 800m front crawl.

Sudbury now have five master swimmers in the top ten of their age group in Great Britain .... a tremendous achievement for a small club.
