medals galore for masters swimmers - 1993

Winning Gold medal is getting to be a habit with the swimmerswho represent the masters section of the Sudbury Swimming Club. And when they are not striking gold, they usually manage to come away with a silver or gold .... not to mention a handfull of personal best times achievements. And they are improving all the time. The section has come a long way since a few of the keen swimmers got together at the formaer Sudbury open pool at the instigation of Andy Read, then manager. That was back in 1986 and within a year, with only five members, they were entering their first competition at Stowmarket. Now there are 16 members and ten of them compete regularly. This year has seen them at their very best ... they have 98 medals, 24 of them gold ones. They compete all over the country and are scheduled to compete in Ireland in September. 13th National Masters - sheffieled 1993

Sudbury swimmers Vicki Buck and John Fry competed int national masters swimming championships at Britains premier competition pool, Ponds Forge, Sheffiled and emerged amongst the medals. The presitigious championship attracts more competitiors than any other swimming championship currently being held in the uk, many of them World, European, British and National record holders. Vicki, aged 42, who competes for the East Anglian Swallow Tails club, but trains with Sudbury was defending her 200m meetrs butterfly gold medal of 1992 in the 40 to 44 years age group. Having just recovered from a virus infection which nearly prevented her from swimming, she managed a very courageous silver medal performance. Probably her best swim of the weekend came in the 4 x 50m individual Medley, where from a huge field including National and British record holders she swam her way to a bronze medal.. John Fry, age 50, swimming for Sudbury Masters in the 50 - 54 years age group swam in six events, and showed his outstanding class, especially in the Breaststroke events. Swimming against the World, European and British record holder in the 200m and 50m breaststroke he swam brilliantly to win the silver medal in both events.

Sharon and Stuart Do it again
Travelling to Wolverhampton for a Masters Gala, Sudbury's Stuart McLellan and Sharon Reid were among the medals again. Stuart came first in the 100m Butterfly event and also stormed home first in the 100m back crawl, the 100m freestyle and the 50m back crawl, achieving personal best times in both. He continued to load the field in the 200m freestyle as well and achieved a second place in the 100m IM, with another personal best time, third in the 100m breaststroke and fourth in the 50m butterfly event. His weekend of success was completed with a fith place in the 50m breaststroke. Its was also a good gala for Sharon Reid who took first place in the 100m butterfly stroke, achieving a personal best in the process. There was a second personal best in the 200m IM which she won.
commonwealth Games Club Appeal
On 20th October the Sudbury & District Swimming club held a sponsored swim to support the Commonwealth Games appeal. Karen Pickering visited the club to support the event. 60 members took part, raising over £600.
